Need a small, mini miter box … but can’t find one at the store?
That’s exactly what happened to me.
You see, I was right in the middle of building & creating one of my tutori-o’s (How to Make a Colored Pencil Picture Frame), and I knew I was gonna have to chop down a boatload of small pencil pieces.
Forget measuring & marking each piece… I needed something that would let me make quick work of cutting down a bunch of pieces with exact, matching measurements. There’s a couple of hardware stores in town, but they didn’t have any miter boxes small enough for what I needed.
I didn’t think I had any other choice with the limited time I had to get one… so I whipped out my sketchbook and designed a really simple once that would help get the job done. Then, while I was making it, I made sure to take pictures and write down all the details needed to make one.
And that’s how this step-by-step DIY Dork tutorial was created.
Here’s what you’ll see inside:
The Tutori-O shows you how to make a really simple, mini miter box for just a couple of bucks (if you don’t already have some small scraps of wood laying around the house). It’s fully decked out with labeled measurements in 1/8″ increments (0 – 9″ or longer if needed) and two areas to make both straight and 45* angled cuts.

Oh by the way, funny thing is… once I had started using this mini miter box I had made myself… I actually stumbled upon two different miter boxes at a hobby/craft store (a plastic one & an aluminum one) that are designed for more precise cutting.
If you’d like to see more about them… I have a little review of those mini miter boxes here.
Later!
